Katsudon done well
When a restaurant only serves one dish, you know it will be the best dish they serve.
Zuicho is tiny local restaurant with 8 seats at the counter. They serve only one thing: katsudon, t’s popular with the locals, and you’ll know because there will likely be a line outside the door.
Katsudon is a traditional and popular Japanese dish which consists of Tonkatsu (bread and deep fried pork cutlet) over rice with Egg, vegetables and sauce. To be honest, I personally have not been a huge fan of katsudon as I prefer my Katsu fried and crispy separate from the rice but Zuicho has completely changed my mind.
There is something special about the selection of the cut of pork used at Zuicho, the thickness of it, the ratio of batter, the sauce gently drizzled on top. The Katsu somehow maintains its crispiness – which many katsudons fail to do. And the egg and rice below perfectly compliment it.
We hesitated to add this article because if more people know about this place, the longer we have to wait in order to go. Generally, you’ll have to wait at least 10-15min to get a seat and its worth it. Don’t bother coming with more than 2 people unless you don’t mind eating and waiting separately.
You’ll find Zuicho in the first floor of an unassuming building just a short walk away from the downtown hustle and bustle of the Shibuya Station shopping area. If you like Katsudon, its definitely worth the trip.
Itadakimasu!
