You never have to go far to find coffee in Japan. Cafés are in abundance as are convenience stores and the ever-present vending machines. But if you want authentic Italian coffee, then you should go to the pros, and there is no place better than illy CAFFÈ.

You can find the Italian lager Birra Moretti on sale at illy CAFFÈ.
What‘s So Special About illy?
Founded in the 1930’s, illy has been a staple across much of Europe for decades by adhering to its principle of trying to offer the best coffee in the world, and they found a receptive audience to that message in Japan.
They Have the Best Gadgets!
From an espresso machine created in 1935 by the namesake and company founder, Francesco Illy, which provided steam heat without burning the coffee beans, to pressurization cans which keep coffee fresher, longer, illy offers a superior brand of coffee that’s sure to impress even the most die-hard snobs.
So, Where Can You Get Some?
One branch, located in the posh Yurakucho suburb of Tokyo, is definitely worth a visit. The front and center of the store is dominated by two massive tables surrounded by bar stools which invite customers to come in for a quick shot of espresso and chat.
A massive chandelier dangles above which is made entirely of teacups from the illy Art collection. To one side and at the back of the café there are more comfortable tables for customers who would like to sit for a while and get comfortable. You’ll likely see friends relaxing together or a solo patron with a book or laptop.
It’s Foreigner-Friendly!
The menu is offered in both English and Japanese, and the helpful staff are easily able to accommodate overseas guests. Pasta, sandwiches, and desserts like pancakes and tiramisu compliment their impressive drink menu.
Their signature espresso should not be missed, but if you are looking for something stronger, they also offer alcoholic beverages like wine and beer.
Oh, YeahーCoffee and Beer!
The combination of café and bar is genius and gives an impressive leg up to operators in the oversaturated café market, and to my discomfort, fans of the brand flock to the store for that very reason.
If you are visiting on a weekend, it may be difficult to find a seat as this shop’s menu and location have made it a popular destination, but the good news is that there are many illy cafés to choose from and any location is worth a visit.
